Initial VT Evaluations

A typical eye examination evaluates visual acuity (20/20), the need for glasses, and eye health.  While these are important aspects of vision, these tests will not detect many other types of visual disorders that affect reading, learning, sports, concentration, and everyday life.

Up to 75% of vision problems including most eye teaming (binocular vision), focusing (accommodation), tracking (oculomotor) and visual processing problems will be missed by a basic eye exam or screening.

A vision therapy evaluation gathers vision testing data that can lead to a profile of visual skills deficits and/or diagnoses as well as visual strengths.  It is a much more extensive battery of tests than a routine eye exam.

Our comprehensive evaluation includes two in-office appointments and then a consultation with the doctor.

NVDC - VT Eval

Neuro-visual Examination with doctor (first appointment – 30-45 mins)

  • Eye Health
  • Visual Acuity at distance and near (this includes looking for potential “lazy eyes”)
  • Eye Alignment (looking for potential “eye turns” or “strabismus”)
  • Eye Teaming (aka Binocularity – the ability for the eyes to work together)
  • Accommodation Skills (the ability of the eyes to engage or relax their focusing power)
  • Eye Tracking (aka Oculomotor Function – the ability of the eyes to accurately fixate on an object and track/follow it when it is in motion)
  • Visual-Motor/Sensorimotor Status (specifically through fine motor control and laterality/directionality development)
  • Primitive Reflexes (these are developmental stages that can greatly impact motor and cognitive development)
  • Phonological Awareness (development of the sound-symbol relationship that leads to language skills such as spelling and reading)

Visual Perceptual & Cognitive Evaluation (second appointment – 60-80 mins)

  • Visual Processing Skills (this involves evaluating how the visual system, as a whole, is operating… these are the groups of skills needed to “use” and comprehend visual information)
  • Reading Abilities
  • Functional Visual Field

Consultation with doctor (third appointment 30-45 mins)

Once the second evaluation is complete, an evaluation report will be generated for you within 2-3 business days and uploaded into your patient portal.  We will then call you to schedule the consultation.

Consult with doctor

  • Review testing results
  • Q & A
  • Discuss treatment plan

  • Scheduling

** We also offer “The Dyslexia Screening (TDS)” test for an additional $50.00.  This test may also be administered without a full evaluation.  Please note that we DO NOT diagnose dyslexia.  We are credentialed to administer testing however you must take the results to a dyslexia specialist for diagnosis.  The TDS is a comprehensive test that looks for symptoms involving Dyslexia, Dyseidesia, Dysphonesia, and Dysphoneidesia.  You may also use this test to provide information to educators. **
